Proof Reading

Proof Reading is basically a quality control exercise,not a substitute for copy editing (see Copy Editing Web page). Due diligence is the mainstay of a professional proof reader. His is the final check before going to print.

The main tasks include:
                                        > Check conformity with editing style sheet,including:

                                                                  spelling
                                                                  hyphenation
                                                                  capitalisation
                                                                  shortened forms
                                                                  numbers,dates,percentages,
                                                                  symbols and equations

                                       > Check conformity with the design specifications,including:

                                                                   heading hierarchies,running heads and footers,
                                                                   buttons and rollovers,and labels
                                                                   font
                                                                   alignment and spacing
                                                                   page or screen layout

Other duties of a proof reader are to mark up any queries for the editor, typesetter or formatter, the latter by using conventional proofreading marks. These marks differ in their styles and presentations with the two major Style manuals, namely the Australian Style Manual and the Chicago Manual of Style.
