The purpose of copy editing is to remove mistakes, inconsistencies or other infelicities of
expression that could irritate or confuse readers -- or embarrass the author. At the copy editing
stage, the editor therefore concentrates on the details of language, spelling and punctuation; on
achieving consistency of style and layout; and on checking references, illustrations, tables, headings,
sequences, links, and preliminary matter and endmatter. Structural Editing is the most time
consuming task for an editor. In structural editing whole pages,paragraphs and sentences can be
rearranged in order to allow the text to flow,or,in some cases, even to make sense for the readers.
Copy Editing on Computer
Where an author's typescript has been submitted to the publisher on disk, the copy editor may
be asked to work in one of a number of ways.
Personally, I prefer an item to be forwarded in manuscript form in order that space be sufficient
to allow for Microsoft Track Changes.
The copy editor may mark up a print-out of the text in the usual way. The typesetter then
uses the marked-up hard copy to key in the text. This method basically ignores the fact that the
typescript was submitted on disk.
The copy editor may be asked to make all corrections on computer, and insert the
typesetting codes. With this method, the copy editor effectively takes over most or all of the
typesetter's job as well.
